About our
Online Farm Stand
The Online Farmstand is currently closed
The Online Farmstand was created in March 2020 in response to the covid-19 pandemic. We were uncertain about the future of farmers markets but had produce growing and ready for consumers. We did not yet have a farmstand so did not have a way for people to just drop by for produce. It was just the start of our third season in farming, we had only two small greenhouses which meant limited square footage for production but we were maximizing every inch. The online store gave us the ability to safely provide produce to our community members through outdoor pickups and limited contact. We were the only ones touching or handling the produce and handing it directly to the customer. Word spread through social media and the online store flourished. We are grateful to so many of our customers who found us in our early years and stuck by us through the learning curve.
In 2021, we received a grant through the GroundWorks Center to build a permanent farmstand. Our main goal with the farmstand was to provide better access to our produce. Living in a rural area not everyone has high speed internet to be able to utilize the online store, there were also technical glitches that made ordering online for some more difficult. In April 2022, we opened the roadside farmstand, extended hours and extended our open season in to mid November allowing for broader access to our produce that did not require high speed internet.
With the unpredictable freezing/snowy weather of Northern Michigan winters having the farmstand open every day isn’t practical, but trying to schedule, coordinate, and customize online orders was also difficult with many needing to reschedule pickups due to weather. Coordinating the online farmstand, maintaining a CSA, farmers market and roadside stand while parenting two young children became quite a juggling act in 2022.
In the winter of 2022/23 we began opening the roadside farmstand once or twice a week which was much easier to schedule around weather - and - allowed for more flexibility for us and our customers.
We continue to keep our customers up to date via our newsletter. Emails will be sent with up dates to farmstand hours (in the winter it will be whenever there is a pop up farmstand) and in the summer months it will be to up date when new crops arrive at the farmstand and to keep everyone in the loop about what is going on with Z&N Farm produce.
